Mike Marks – a rare archetype…

i have and had been skating Denver park for the last 8 years i have lived in this city… i have seen lots of people come and go… i have also seen a lot of the same faces shredding that park everyday… well, one day, a few years back, i saw what i thought to be a teenager i had never seen before… he was absolutely annihilating the park… he had every trick in the bag… i mean every damn trick. he was too good to not be sponsored… i looked at his shoes and he had brand new Nike’s on… i pretended to skate around and not pay attention to him murdering the park… i couldn’t help but watch and imagine what it would be like to not suck and be good like him… to top it off, he had brought his girl with him to the park… this dood was on another level, and i knew it.

a few months later, Nike had a demo at Denver park… all the big names were there and it was quite a scene… sure enough, this teenager that showed up out of nowhere was shredding in the demo… he was on his own vibe, skating parts of the park that the legends were not… he was stealing the show at times, but with class and style… i usually hate the kids that skate in the demos that are not part of the team in town… but this kid was legit. then it clicked, this dood is on Nike! word travels fast, and soon after this demo everyone knew who Mike Marks was in Denver… he was soon cruising around with the best filmers and shredders… his skate career had begun…

the way i met Mike was shredding with him at the second Club(house) location… it was easy to get to know him… usually when you are as talented and focused as Mike, it would be easy to be a dick… this kid was and is the most appreciative guy… every time he got beer from Great Divide or skated (destroyed) the Club(house), he would look me in the eye and say “Thanks Andrew”…

i had the pleasure of shredding and filming him… although it was primarily at the club(house), it was sick to be a part of… he was always skating the hardest he could… it seemed like he was learning a new trick everyday (even in the f#cking winter!)… every session he would have new tricks to film at the club(house)… he was and is the most entertaining guy to watch in games of SKATE as well… doin’ his tricks mega-proper and haulin’ ass… i really wanna be like Mike… it was sweet to witness part of his progression…

although i don’t get to see him often anymore, i know he is always doing well… he knows what he wants out of life, and he goes and gets it… he doesn’t shit on anyone while getting what’s his… he has been dicked around in the skate industry a bit, but he continues to just rip… he deserves all the good that comes to him… his recent interview in Thrasher is just a taste of what is to come… i knew he was destined for success.

hey Mike, nobody can hold you down… you f#cking rule.

peace and noLove…
