that’s, like, your opinion, man…

since i was a little lad, i have always seen things in a weird way… i say weird because i don’t know how or why i see them the way i do… i remember having to read mythology and books like Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby… these books were full of undertones and subliminal meanings and shit… i just read them and took it in as i pleased… i would never talk in class, but when i would get forced into speaking up i would say how i interpreted the reading (if i did read the chapter, haha)… every time i would be wrong… every damn time… this was a big part of the reason i didn’t like to speak up! regardless, i didn’t realize at the time, but i was/am allowed to take what i want from a book… it is my brain… i see it how i see it… right?

i remember my dad talking to my English teachers all the time about, “why is he wrong?”… it would be about a paragraph or essay i wrote about a book… one time a teacher even admitted that my perspective could be plausible and that she had never heard of an interpretation like mine… i still didn’t get a good grade on the paper because it wasn’t “right”…

instead, the “right” answers were forced down my throat… i didn’t understand why it was the way it was, but that’s just how it is… don’t question it… take what we give you… the authors of these books would be devastated to know that we are forcing a general understanding of their artwork to our youth… their purpose in writing novels was to open peoples’ minds… not close them…

on this note, i have been realizing that on a day-to-day basis our opinions on things are not respected… they are often ignored or warped to fit the “norm”… the way you see something is personal… it is not general… how have we let this happen? when did people forget the importance of uniqueness? originality?

well, i guess it is unsafe to let everyone have a different perspective… is that why we all hate one another?

skateboarding is a healthy way to express yourself… we all see it differently… every style, every spot, every trick, everything… but no one can tell you, “you are doing it wrong”… it’s our sense of freedom… this is a huge reason why we skate… to get the fuck away… to create our own novels… to interpret life the way we want to live it…

so be proud of being that weird kid that sees shit “weirdly”… you are the one that is truly free.

peace and noLove…
