Koston is everywhere…

the secret is officially out… skateboarding is awesome… everyone knows it now… and i am unsure of how i feel about it… i am not sure where i stand in the crowd…

slowly but surely, i have been seeing skateboarding trickling into more and more commercials… sometimes it’s just a quick clip, sometimes it’s the background activity, sometimes it’s a mall grab, and sometimes it’s a professional skater cameo… but when have i ever seen it as the focus… when has there been a skateboarding commercial on a major network? the answer is never. i knew Koston had made his commercial for his new shoe (which is rad), but i assumed it would stay and exist within the skateboarding community (and whored out all over the web)…

we need to point out that Nike was behind all of this… regardless of their tout in the sports/media world, i couldn’t believe my eyes when i was watching NBC over the weekend and saw the commercial playing… the commercial is sick… skate stoppers being skated off the rail and destroying everything is genius… i had to ask, “what channel is this?”, but i really already knew… it took me a good five minutes to realize what had just happened…

my mind started racing with thoughts about what this could mean… not just for Nike or Koston, but for skateboarding… Nike doesn’t deserve Koston’s legacy, but Koston deserves to be known and respected by mass media as well as the skateboarding community… but where will skateboarding go from here? is it just a one time thing? is P-Rod gonna have his own commercials? is Nike gonna take over? are other brands or distributions gonna start making big budget commercials? the questions are endless…

as a skateboarder born and raised in the time period of the rebirth of skateboarding (early to mid nineties), i like skateboarding to be the “weird” thing to do… i don’t like the mainstream… skateboarding is not an edited or scripted activity… it’s raw and gritty…

i hope this commercial does nothing but inform the masses of Eric Koston… he is one of the sickest doods to ever be on a skateboard… i have an infinite amount if respect for him and what he does for skateboarding… he has been a legend in my mind since Mouse… he deserves all the good that skateboarding has brought him…

bravo, Koston…

peace and noLove…

Koston is king. Having more people looking up to a talented, creative and innovative guy like Koston is a good thing. The reason why Nike is a dope brand (across all lifestyles/sports) is because they care about sport culture (and sub-culture). They’re careful to be authentic. To talk to their athletes. And to market their products from a “real” point of view. There’s a difference between a company putting Koston’s face on NBC and a company putting Ryan Sheckler’s face on NBC. Nike knows the difference. And that’s why jaded old skate-rats like us wear SBs.
