are we set up for another implode?

another Wisdom Wednesday inspired by the Bones Brigade documentary… they talked about the rise and fall of skateboarding in the earlier years (70’s-80’s)… they brought up how the involvement of large corporations help build up the popularity of skateboarding… well, they were also the reason for its disappearance… once they realized they weren’t profiting off skateboarding anymore, they fled the industry and took the life out of it…

after looking at how the industry was built up and destroyed by corporate bullshit, it seems like we are set for this to happen again… other people see this too, right? i feel like we (skateboarders) don’t rely that heavily on their involvement in our world, but they do have control over a lot of bigger parts of the industry… big money contests, big budget films, and promoting skateboarding to the mainstream… wait a second… of those 3 things i just listed, i realize that i don’t care about any of those aspects of skateboarding… in fact, i don’t see that as skateboarding at all… so what do we have to worry about?

i guess we should worry about these big money skateboarders… these guys have the power and money to start their own companies… they have the ability right now to pull out of their corporate sponsors and start something on their own… not only will they help the industry by putting their money back into it, but they will open up corporate sponsorship for other skaters (younger/new blood)… if we can start this cycle now, we can continue on this progressive path we have maintained for the last 5 years… we know we cannot eliminate corporations from our world, so we need to use them as they use us… right? i never thought i would say this, but after Jamie Thomas hooked up with New Balance, i was convinced that we need to coexist…

the problem is that these big money skaters don’t see it this way… they are probably so monetarily over-extended in their sick lifestyles that the thought of starting their own company’s doesn’t exist… even if they have an idea for a company, it would be so warped by them being involved in the corporate world that it would suck… so what do we do?

(Torey Pudwill is a good example of getting involved with Grizzly Grip… good shit, man! Nick Trapasso with Life Extension too… sick.)

smaller, skater-owned companies are where its at… the purity and humbleness of skateboarding lives within these companies… the creativity and originality of skateboarding resides here… it’s not about appealing to the masses… it’s about appealing to fellow shredders… we want the people who appreciate shitty spots and say fuck it…

if i have learned anything in my life it is not to rely on anyone, for anything, ever… we cannot rely on people outside of skateboarding to see the predicament we have put ourselves in with these corporations… we need to come together and stick together if the shit hits the fan…

skateboarding will never go away… especially that raw shit… it’ll always be the best… stay up…

peace and noLove…
