we are all vandals…

destruction is a metaphoric and literal term in the skateboarding world… when you go to a spot and land a bunch of different tricks in a single session, it can be considered “destroying the spot”… the other destruction has a literal meaning… you go to a spot and actually mess up the perfection of the obstacle you skate (paint on a flat bar, waxing a curb, grinding marble, etc.)… the latter definition is the focus for today…

i used to feel bad when i would skate a brand new spot… laying down a coat of wax on a brand new ledge (substance didn’t matter) felt destructive… i respect the hard work and artistic effort that goes into all structures… after getting kicked out of many spots and being told that we are destroying the property we are skating, a friend explained his outlook on street spots…

he explained that people have created these spots… people have gone as far as up-heaving granite, marble, or other precious rocks from the earth and implanted them in our urban landscapes… think of the destruction we cause to create our urban areas… think of all the trees, grass, waterways, etc. that have been manipulated and destroyed over time… it is a crazy thought… our entire country has been destroyed and urbanized…

this revelation has empowered me not only on my skateboard, but in my understanding of how we have created this reality we live in… it is an insane reality… the amount of money (tax dollars) that is poured into our urban landscapes is insane… i’m not gonna go into that or any other politics…

just remember if any cops or security guards treat you like a vandal, use this thought to explain the “bigger picture”… they need wisdom too…

peace and noLove…
