where’d the checkpoints go?

I was heading home last night in my car… I exited I-25 at 20th street… I had a memory flash through my mind…

I was walking home from a night at a bar in the highlands… I stumbled my way down 20th street towards chestnut… All of a sudden there was a scene like no other… Cop cars and paddy wagons parked under a barrage of bright lights… Lanes of traffic were blocked off and cars were being stopped one by one… A good ol’ DUI checkpoint! I was psyched because I was walking… I already felt a sense of one upping the police because I was walking through their “trap”… I could stroll by their “operation” and laugh to myself at how I was winning the battle…

I continued to stumble down 20th while taking some photos to document the madness…

I’m sure they didn’t like that (haha)… They had one lane of traffic cones off so I assumed I could extend the use of the sidewalk by walking there… Seemed like a luxury for the responsible pedestrian (which they are promoting with a DUI checkpoint)… i hear a yell from across the way, “GET OUT OF THE ROAD!”… assuming it is a cop, i exit the luxury pedestrian lane and get back on the sidewalk… i make it about 100 ft. and stumble back into the luxury lane… next thing i know, i am being yelled at and rushed by 3 police officers… they immediately restrain me and frisk me…

i am drunk and careless… i assume they are going to scare me for messing around the checkpoint… i was doing what they were promoting, right? WRONG! i was thrown in the back of a paddy wagon and taken off to the drunk tank for walking through a DUI checkpoint… the anger inside me boiled and continues to boil at the police’s lack of discretion… a night i will never forget…

when this memory hit me, i realized i have not seen one checkpoint all summer… i think they serve a purpose but maybe they should not be run by cops… they barely know what is right and wrong, unfortunately…

peace and noLove…
