discovering the northwest…

well, skateboarding has once again given me an opportunity to go somewhere new… the beautiful northwest region of the US… Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington were the focus of the trip… although we escaped the city-life for some mountain/ocean sites, the trip was all about skating…

we skated glenhaven, burnside, brooklyn, battle grounds, benedict, sea sk8, green lake, dude barn, and the streets of Portland… the skateboarding in the northwest is just as, if not more, impressive as denver’s shredding… the parks are awesome. they take a beating from the amount of rainfall the northwest gets… the tranny is not forgiving at any park… you fuck up, you get fucked up… i’d say the most unique/fun park for me was battle grounds… lotta stuff to shred… weird stuff too…

in Portland, skateboarding seemed universal… it seemed like everyone skated… it was very much accepted, which was surprising to me… i knew that there was a dope scene there, but what i experienced was far from what i expected… an impressive part of the trip was the DIY scene… the first spot we went to was a DIY spot… later in the trip, we skated an entire DIY park (not burnside)… then there is burnside… a timeless DIY wonder in the skate world… the city is way down with skateboarders improving parts of town with skate spots/parks…

the city itself is pretty run down… beat up sidewalks, gritty streets, and older buildings… but the public transit system is 100% up to date… buses everywhere and an easy-to-navigate light rail system make getting around simple… skating from place to place was gritty but fun… i understand now why Tyler Bledsoe is so good at ledges… there are sick ledges everywhere! i also understand why Silas Baxter-Neal is so sick… the street spots are gnarly in Portland…

when we were not skating or exploring the city, we were sight-seeing… the forests are beyond lush, and the mountains are dominating… on the coast, the ocean is fierce and mysterious… there are sandy beaches and/or hillsides that you can watch the sheer power of the waves… we also rowed around lost lake (near mt. hood)… a never-ending day everyday…

so, the wisdom i want to leave you with today is go to the northwest for a skate trip! you’ll come out with some great memories… you may not even leave… also, let your skateboard guide you sometimes… it’ll take you to places you may have never been before… it’ll always surprise you.

thanks for the love, Portland!

peace and noLove…
