i am different… so different.

ever since i became aware of labels, i have been fascinated with our use of them… the way people talk about what they are or who they are or what they are about is funny to me… we become more comfortable with ourselves when we can relate or identify with a group of people… we label ourselves…

the first labels i became aware of were “jock” and “skater”… you were either one or the other at my high school… i never looked at them as labels when i was younger… i just thought they were groups you chilled with… cliques… whatever…

i chilled with both these groups because i skated and i was a good athlete… i was a “skater” through and through but i was down with the “jocks”… i never thought it was weird until now… i bridged the gap between these two opposites… skateboarding wasn’t so “lame” to “jocks” anymore because a “skater” could play sports… it was different…

my parents supported me in both activities, but were more easily able to be involved in my baseball career… they didn’t understand skateboarding, but i know they liked the fact that i was doing something different…

i talk to a lot of people nowadays and hear a lot of stories about how they were outcasts at their schools because they skated… stories about how they were hazed and made fun of… i can’t relate but i can understand how they were treated… it really was a different animal back then… it bums me out to hear how my friends were treated… no one deserves that… especially at that young of an age…

we need to make sure that we teach our children that being different is a wonderful thing… parents need to encourage their kids to try new and different sports or activities… teachers need to praise uniqueness in the classroom… we all need to lead by example… being different is dope…

if we can all see or understand one another, then our labels and labeling would become less “all encompassing”… we need to learn about each other as people, not as our labels…

peace and noLove
